Frequently Asked Questions
For future participants and current participantsFuture Participants
I've already researched diabetes on the Internet or read a brochure. Why should I still go to class?
If your son or daughter was learning to drive, you would never tell them to read the manual and then let them drive without supervision. You would not give them the keys after an hour lesson. In the same way, there are many skills to learn in order to manage diabetes, and it takes time and practice to master them.
Why is it important to attend a diabetes education program?
Research shows that patients who participate in a diabetes education program are four times less likely to develop serious complications.
I have had diabetes for many years. Am I still eligible for the program?
Yes. The ABC Diabetes program is designed both for people who have just been diagnosed and for those who have had diabetes for many years. It is important to have the most up-to-date information in order to confidently manage your diabetes.
I attended a diabetes program when I was first diagnosed. Why should I attend again?
Management of diabetes changes over time. There may be new things to learn. Especially if your treatment has changed, it is important to get current information. Each participant receives an ABC Diabetes Education Manual that is constantly updated to contain the most current information about living with diabetes.
My doctor told me that I only have a touch of diabetes; I am not taking any medication. Should I attend the program?
Even if you don't need medication, your diagnosis with diabetes means that you can learn a lot about managing your diabetes from the program. Remember, there is no such thing as borderline diabetes, and the ABC Diabetes program will be customized to meet your needs.
How much does the program cost?
The ABC Diabetes Program is covered by most insurance companies, so there is usually no cost to the participants.
What will I learn in the program?
In the ABC Program you will learn about healthy eating, the importance of physical activity, staying healthy, managing stress, how to monitor your diabetes, along with much more information. You will gain the confidence to be your day-to-day doctor!

Can I bring someone with me to the ABC Program?
Everyone is invited to bring a family member or friend for support to the program.
What should I bring to class?
Bring your paperwork and your blood glucose meter if you have one.
I don't have my paperwork! What should I do?
Your paperwork either came in a large white envelope in the mail or through an email with attached forms. If you misplaced or never received yours, the educator will have extra copies of the paperwork at the first class. Try to get there early so you have time to fill it out.
I don't have a blood glucose meter. Do I need one for the program?
Tracking your blood sugar is important for managing your diabetes. If you do not have one, you will receive a free, state-of-the-art blood glucose meter, valued at $70, at your first class.
Should I bring a notebook?
At the first session, you will receive a book about diabetes management that is yours to keep. It has spaces for notes, and is covered by insurance as part of the program.
I came to the first class. Isn't that enough?
Because there is a lot of information about diabetes management, we can't fit it all into one class. If you do not attend the rest of the course, you will not learn to fully manage your diabetes. Remember, if your class time has become inconvenient, you must call to have it rescheduled at 215-283-2833.
Are meals provided?
Because of the wide range of allergies and tastes of our participants, we cannot provide meals during classes. If your class is scheduled at a mealtime, or if it is indicated in your paperwork, make sure to bring your own meal.
Why should I schedule a follow-up?
If you have a new dietary restriction or if you've developed a new condition, a follow-up may be necessary. If you aren't sure, call one of our enrollment specialists at 215-283-2833, and they will discuss your options.
What happens if I miss a class?
If you must miss a class, simply call and ask to be rescheduled and we will arrange for you to make up the class you missed.
